A fantastic antique pictorial motto embroidery featuring a very dapper owl with purple scarf smoking a cigar perched on a smiling crescent man in the moon . Motto reads "We wont come home till morning" worked in red floss. Gorgeous articulation in stitchwork of owl and man in the moon. This motto was very popular in the Edwardian Era, found on punch paper motto 'samplers', on antique postcards c. 1907-1910 often having fanciful carousing cats by artists Boulanger and Louis Wain, on sheet music for various renditions of the song "We Won't Go Home Till Morning". I did find 1 example of sheetmusic from 1842 with the same title. The motto heyday however appears to be the 1st decade of the 20th C.. The owl and crescent Man in the Moon appear to be a unique image. It's beautifully executed. Great framed or worked into a larger textile, so many options.

Fabric is an ecru or beige color. Not positive if fabric is linen or cotton but tend to think it is a cotton. I have given 4 pics of backside.
Appears to have been matted or mounted given the slightly darker edges - must have been finely threaded though as there is not indication of tacks or staples in cloth.
A large piece really, would display great. Fabric measures 21" w. x 18" l. at center, embroidery coverage approx. 15.5" w. x 15" l. including the cigar smoke.
Beautiful antique, c. 1908, hand embroidery excellent. Age appropriate toning on fabric - may lift a bit more with gentle hand soak. I have hand soaked this piece in Quilt Soap 3-4 cycles in sink, a lot of the age yellowing lifted for sure, it is clean. A few light wrinkles from my drawer storage will press out. A few faint fabric stains remain, worst at end of cigar, once framed or mounted really wouldn't be distracting. A few very small holes near edges of fabric- not excessive. Fabric and floss strong and healthy. Fantastic textile at over 100 years old. Selling as is, as shown, described, as always.
