Description: This chrome-era postcard titled "Guardians of the Arizona Desert" features a dramatically contorted crested (cristate) Saguaro Cactus, nicknamed the "Desert Octopus" for its unusual growth pattern of sweeping, curved arms. The back notes that these plants store water through massive root systems, bloom with waxy white flowers in May, and produce purple fruits in June favored by the Papago Indians, who celebrated the harvest with an elaborate festival. The photograph is an Anscochrome image by Norton Louis Avery.
