“Smoking Is Very Sophisticated” Brilliant original anti-smoking campaign by the American Cancer Society—one of a set of three posters in this series from 1974. This is for the ONE poster; both I currently have available are pictured but are listed separately. Measures 11x16
It is easier to find reprints online but this is a rare original issue poster from the famous 1970s public health campaign designed to discourage smoking/ aimed against tobacco marketing.
Condition is “Good” with slight crease marks, minor wear to a couple spots along edges, see photos for detail. Not framed.
Campaign History
* The Concept: In the 1970s, the American Cancer Society released a series of satirical anti-smoking posters with titles:
"Smoking is very glamorous,"
“Smoking is very debonair,"
"Smoking is very sophisticated". (I have two of the three variations of these available at the time of the is listing: I will link below to view the other).
* The ads paired these high-class catchphrases with stark, unglamorous images of tired, aging, or sick-looking smokers to counter classic Hollywood and advertising tropes.
In pretty good condition overall. Very difficult to find these. The complete series of three used to be hung around the halls of my elementary school and I always found them interesting and amusing. As an adult, I appreciate the imagery and originality of this campaign.
