ORIGINAL CIRCA 1918 WWI-ERA MILITARY PHOTOGRAPH — TWO IDENTIFIED KENTUCKY SERVICEMEN — DIRECT FAMILY PROVENANCE
This is an originalcirca 1918military photograph measuring approximately3½" x 5½". The photograph is printed on avery thick, rigid, postcard-like photographic board, substantially heavier and thicker than a standard paper photograph.
The photograph showstwo servicemen posed together beside an American flag. The men are identified asGraham B. Cowherd and Claud Davis Wade, both associated withHopkinsville, Kentucky.

Graham Brown Cowherd has a particularly interesting and well-documented World War I history.Hisdeath certificate records his World War I service, and Kentucky National Guard historical records provide additional details: Cowherd enlisted in theU.S. Marine Corps in April 1918 at age 17andserved overseas with the6th Regiment, Marinesduring WWI.He waswounded in action on November 10, 1918, immediately before the Armistice, and was subsequently awarded thePurple Heart.Following the war, Cowherd returned to Hopkinsville and became active in theKentucky National Guard, eventually rising to the rank ofCaptain.
Claud Davis Wade
The second serviceman isClaud Davis Wade of Hopkinsville, Kentucky.
A separate photograph from this collection bears the period identification“Lieutenant Claud Wade.”Original registration documentation identifying the men is also included.
Provenance
This photograph comes directly through the family of Graham B. Cowherd. I am a direct relative of Cowherd, and this photograph has remained in the family collection for generations. This is the first time it will be offered outside of the Cowherd family. The accompanying identification and registration documentation has also been preserved with the family collection.
This is an especially interesting image because it connectstwo identified Hopkinsville, Kentucky servicemenand comes directly through the family of Graham B. Cowherd, whose WWI service with the6th Marines, combat wound, and Purple Heart are documented in historical records.
Condition: Minor age-related wear consistent with a 108 year old photograph. Light edge wear and small surface crease in top left corner.
