From Wikipedia:TheConvairRIM-2 Terrierwas a two-stage medium-range navalsurface-to-air missile(SAM), among the earliest SAMs to equipUnited States Navyships. It underwent significant upgrades while in service, starting withbeam-riding guidancewith a 10-nautical-mile (19km) range at a speed ofMach1.8 and ending as asemi-active radar homing(SARH) system with a range of 40nmi (74km) at speeds as high as Mach3. It was replaced in service by theRIM-67 Standard ER (SM-1ER). The Terrier was a development of theBumblebee Project, theUnited States Navy\'s effort to develop asurface-to-air missileto provide a middle layer of defense against air attack (between carrierfightersandantiaircraft guns).It was test launched fromUSSMississippion January 28, 1953, and first deployed operationally on theBoston-class cruisers,BostonandCanberra, in the mid-1950s, withCanberrabeing the first to achieve operational status on June 15, 1956. Its US Navy designation was SAM-N-7 until 1963, when it was redesignated RIM-2.__
