Fifty years later, we are celebrating America 250.The Marquis de Lafayette (1757–1834) was a French military officer who became a hero in both the American Revolution and the early French Revolution. Role in the American Revolution Joined the Continental Army: At age 19, he defied the King of France, bought a ship, and traveled to America to volunteer as a major general without pay. Bonded with Washington: He formed a close, father-and-son-like friendship with George Washington and wintered with the troops at Valley Forge. Fought in Key Battles: He was wounded at the Battle of Brandywine and helped trap British forces under Lord Cornwallis at the Battle of Yorktown in 1781, which effectively won American independence. French Revolution: Returning to France as the \"Hero of Two Worlds\", he helped draft the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen alongside Thomas Jefferson and commanded the Paris National Guard.
