Printed by Simmons Press of New Orleans and bearing the Allied Printing Trades Council union label at the bottom.
This is an original piece of New Orleans labor and Mardi Gras history from the celebrated 1979 police strike. The strike resulted in the cancellation or relocation of the major official Carnival parades in New Orleans. The Historic New Orleans Collection holds an identical example in its permanent collection, cataloged as accession 2018.0522.37.

Provenance: I acquired this poster in 1979 while I was in ninth grade. A school friend had an uncle who was a police officer. I asked my friend whether his uncle could obtain a strike poster for me, and my friend brought this poster to school. It has remained in my possession continuously since 1979.
The handwritten notation “MARDI GRAS 1979” on the reverse was added by me years ago.
Condition is shown in the photographs. The poster has been stored rolled for decades and retains a pronounced curl. It has overall age toning, discoloration and scattered staining; a prominent horizontal crease across the center; edge wear; and a small area of paper disturbance near the word “Teamsters.” The existing holes at top were temporarily reused with thumbtacks solely to hold the poster on the wall for photography. The thumbtacks at the bottom are just on the edge. No new holes were made for the photographs.
The poster will be carefully shipped rolled, as it has been stored for many years.
