An Original Civil War Letter from John W Hutchinson, 115th New York to his wife "Catey" written from Chicago Ilinois. October 23, 1862 where he was in a parole camp along with most of his unit, after being captured at Harper's Ferry, Virginia, Sept, 1862. .He writes to his" beloved wife Catey" with news that "Billy" will get his Discharge soon. John fears he will not come home soon and is not looking forward to the rest of his 3 years enlistment - it is too log to be away from her and"my little family". He wants a long letter from her, despite her having a "baby on her lap". He asks if she has received the County Bounty Money. And reports He has not heard from "Mason", and tell to Billy when he comes home to help her out . He writes that she is the "Idol of my Thoughts" and he is "tired of this War " but can bear it if you and the children are alright. He again asks her to write often , and closes "Giving you my only love John W Hutchinson "Direct to Washington Dc Co I , 119th Regt NYSV". John W Hutchinson enlisted August, 1862 was captured at Harper's Ferry, Virginia, paroled at Camp Douglas, Chicago, Illinois, and after Prisoner Exchange died of fever in mid- 1863 during the Siege of Charleston. He is buried in the National Cemetery at Beaufort, SC. . "Mason" mentioned in the letter was John H Mason, Catey's brother, also in the 115th NY.. Brother "Billy" mentioned in the letter was William E Hutchinson who re-enlisted w the 2nd New York Heavy Artillery in 1864, was captured at Cold Harbor, VA and died a POW at Andersonville Prison, Georgia. 8pp 8 x 5" ink w patriotic embossed portrait of Washington & flags. Age stains, ink fading but legible, Overall Good. Comes w a newspaper clipping re injury of his 115th NY comrade, John Greer, who " broke his back"( but actually recovered and served to the end of the War. Comes w service info.
