Popularized during the 16th and 17th centuries, these specialized daggers were held in the left hand while a rapier was wielded in the right. They served a dual defensive and offensive role, specifically designed to trap, parry, or deflect an opponent's sword thrusts.Distinctive Design Elements
Sail/Main-Gauche Guard: The wide, curved metal "sail" plate protects the user's entire hand and knuckles during close-quarters combat.
Blade Catchers: The two open rings near the base of the blade (above the guard) are functional features meant to catch and temporarily bind an enemy’s rapier point during a parry.
Hilt Details: It features a spiral-wrapped grip, short down-turned quillons, and a decorative fluted pommel.
Heraldic Emblem: The sail guard features an applied coat of arms medallion depicting an eagle under a crown, likely representing continental European provenance (such as Spanish or Italian origins).
